Steve Madden has a LOT of shoes. These are the ones that caught my eye.
After nearly 20 years of buying shoes for my stores, I don't think I'll ever be able to look at a shoe collection like a normal shopper.
I immediately go into buyer mode.
What feels new? What trend is actually wearable? What would I put on the floor? What would my customers pick up? And—maybe most importantly—what would I leave behind?
So I went through the Steve Madden Fall ’26 collection exactly the way I would have approached a buy for Dear Lucy.
And there are some really good shoes this season.
The biggest themes I'm seeing? Rich brown suede, updated loafers, metallics, tall boots, interesting textures + a few more directional shapes.

THE ROMEO FUR: The Cozy Loafer 🤎
Loafers continue to be important, but I'm much more interested in the versions that have something unexpected happening.
Enter the Romeo Fur.
You get the classic, preppy feeling of a loafer with a plush faux-fur detail that makes it feel completely different.

If you're going to add another black loafer to your closet, give me a reason.
The Ronie in Black Eel does that with texture.
The glossy, embossed finish takes an otherwise classic black loafer and makes it feel much more interesting.
It's still incredibly versatile visually, but it doesn't read as another basic.

THE RAFE: The Brown Suede Mule 🤎
This is the shoe for that "it's fall but it's still 75 degrees" weather.
The Rafe in Umber Suede gives you the rich brown suede we're seeing everywhere without committing to a boot while it's still warm outside.
And for those of us living in warmer climates, that's a very useful category.
DEAR LUCY EDIT: Relaxed denim, cream trousers or a long skirt + lightweight knit. This is an easy way to make an outfit feel like fall before the temperature agrees.

THE SAFRA: The Soft Suede Flat 🤎
Not every shoe in a buy should scream for attention.
You need the quiet ones, too.
The Safra in Taupe Suede caught my eye because of the combination of the soft neutral color + suede texture.
Taupe works beautifully with so much of the fall palette—chocolate, cream, camel, denim + black—which makes this the kind of shoe I could see doing a lot of work in a wardrobe.

THE KIT: The Contrast Flat 🖤
I love a shoe that can make a very simple outfit look styled.
That's the appeal of the Kit in Black/Natural.
The graphic contrast gives it more personality than a basic flat without making it difficult to wear.

THE CYNTRA: The Metallic Woven Flat ✨
One of my favorite ways to wear metallic shoes is to stop thinking of them as dressy shoes.
Treat metallic like a neutral.
That's why the Cyntra in Woven Champagne stood out to me. You get texture from the woven finish and just enough shine to make it interesting.

Your white sneakers can take the day off.
The Momentum in Gold takes an easy sneaker silhouette and gives it much more personality with the metallic finish.
This is the kind of trend shoe I like because you don't have to change the way you dress to wear it.

THE RIGGS: The Butter-Yellow Tall Boot 💛
This one immediately caught my attention.
The Riggs in Banana Leather takes a classic tall boot and puts it in this soft buttery yellow that feels fresh for fall.
I wouldn't even approach it as a "yellow boot."
Think of it as a creamy neutral.
DEAR LUCY EDIT: A long printed skirt + cream sweater. Dark indigo denim + chocolate brown. Or cream denim + camel.
This is the shoe that gets to be the outfit.

THE EVEREST: The Moto Boot 🖤
Every fall shoe edit needs a little edge.
The Everest in Black Leather brings in that tougher, moto-inspired element we're seeing again.
But I wouldn't necessarily style it with an equally tough outfit.
I like contrast.

That's when this type of boot gets interesting.

THE ERALYN: The Everyday Brown Boot 🤎
Then you need the workhorse.
The Eralyn in Brown is the quieter boot in my edit—the one that doesn't need to be the star because its job is to work with everything else.
And I always looked for shoes like this when I was buying.
Not every style on the floor could be the attention-grabber. You also needed the pair someone would wear three times a week.

Two things that immediately say fall.
The Dusty in Chocolate Brown Suede stood out because it combines color + texture in a way that feels very current without feeling like something you'll be over next season.
And chocolate brown is particularly good with the rest of the fall palette.

THE AZIEL: The Charm Sneaker ✨
And then there's always the shoe that's just fun.
The Aziel has cord + charm detailing that almost makes it feel like your sneaker is wearing jewelry.
It's a little quirky. That's why I like it.
When a shoe has this much personality, I wouldn't over-style it.

So, What Would I Actually Put on the Floor?
This is the part of buying that I always loved.
A good shoe buy isn't about finding every good shoe in a collection. It's about editing.
You want the reliable styles that will get worn constantly. You want enough newness to make the assortment feel fresh. You need texture, color + different heel heights and silhouettes.
And then you need a few shoes that make someone stop.
That's how I approached this edit.
I haven't personally worn or tested every shoe here. These are my selections based on nearly 20 years of buying, merchandising + selling shoes—the styles that caught my eye and that I would have seriously considered putting on my own sales floor.
