What I’d Actually wear for a Day on the Water
There’s just something about a Charleston boat day that feels like summer at its best. Starting at Old Village Yacht Club, stopping for lunch at Islander 71, then cruising toward Breach Inlet with sandy feet, salty hair, and way too many things packed into one giant tote.
The key to dressing for a boat day is keeping it effortless — pieces that feel easy, lightweight, and comfortable, but still pulled together enough for lunch, dock hopping, and all the inevitable photos your friends will take. Think relaxed button-downs, denim shorts that actually fit well, layered jewelry, oversized sunnies, and SPF you’ll genuinely want to reapply.
Here’s everything I’d actually wear and throw in a bag (and the bag I took) for a Charleston day on the water:
The Oversized Button-Down
The easiest layer for boating, beach walks, and post-swim lunches. I love throwing this over a swimsuit with relaxed denim shorts for that effortless coastal look that always works. My current go-to is the Z Supply Airy Gauze Button Up in White.
The Denim Shorts
Relaxed, flattering, and comfortable enough to wear all day. These are the kind of shorts that somehow make every outfit feel cooler without trying too hard. I am loving the Frame Hang Shorts in Beetle. They are perfect length & wash.
The Chic Swimsuit

The Leather Flip Flops
Easy, classic, and comfortable enough for a full day running between docks, lunch spots, and the beach. I have 2 pairs of the Faherty Reef collab– they also have a bottle opener at the sole (but remember, no glass on the beaches).
The Summer Jewelry
I always love mixing turquoise, colorful gemstones, and simple gold pieces in the summer. It keeps outfits feeling relaxed, layered, and a little sun-faded in the best way. Honestly layered necklaces are having a true moment & I am here for it.
The Straw Tote
Big enough to fit towels, sunscreen, snacks, and all the random extras that somehow come along for every boat day. There are so many good options out there so it’s hard to choose, but this one from J.Crew is on sale!
The SPF Lineup (most important)
A combination of practical and luxurious:
